Medals

The Boeing Employees' Coin Club has issued distinctive medals featuring a Boeing product or products most years since the 50th anniversary of The Boeing Company in 1966. These medals are issued in silver, pewter, and bronze, all with a proof-like (mirror-like) finish, and are widely collected by BECC members, Boeing employees and retirees, and other persons interested in aviation and coin club memorabilia. Since the BECC is a non-profit organization, the medal prices are reasonable, although higher this year due to higher silver prices and higher production expenses.

Stearman Kaydet Trainer selected for 2009 medals
2009 medals to feature Stearman Kaydet – BECC Members recently selected the Stearman Kaydet Trainer as the design for the 2009 BECC medal. The Kaydet, the two-seater biplane introduced by Stearman Aircraft Division of Boeing in Wichita, Kansas in 1934, became an unexpected success during World War II. Despite its almost obsolete design, its simple, rugged construction made it ideal as a trainer for novice pilots for the U.S. Army Air Corps (PT-13/-17) and U.S. Navy (NS/N2S).

The Kaydets had fabric-covered wooden wings, single-leg landing gear and an over-built welded-steel fuselage. Only radial engines were used. Between 1936 and 1944, Boeing built 8,584 Kaydets, in all versions, plus the equivalent of 2,000 more in spares.

Kaydets were widely used airplanes. In addition to sales to the Navy and the Army Air Corps, the trainers were sold to Canada, China, the Philippines, Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil for both military and civilian uses. Many were still in service in the early 1990s. Their slow, low-level flying capabilities made them particularly suitable for crop dusting and spraying.

The Kaydet previously appeared on the 1964 Boeing Wichita Coin Club medal, but those medals are hard to find!
